We believe in buying less, but buying better. For this reason, every single material that goes into WATSON has a lifespan of at least 10 years. We also recognize that fashion is the world’s second most polluting industry. In addition to elongating our product’s lifespan, we strive to reduce the environmental impact of our manufacturing wherever possible. This means shopping local - with 84% of our costs going to Canadian vendors - and introducing sustainable materials. With scale, we intend to reduce our carbon footprint more and more.
Our 1050 Denier Ballistic Nylon is know for strength and durability in rugged applications where abrasion resistance is a high priority. It has a 700lb grab strength, and 65lb tear strength.
Used to pad the back and straps, this 3-dimensional, 100% polyester mesh has an abrasion rating of “300,000 Double Rubs” - that’s approximately 20 years if you walk 1km to work and remove your bag 10 times a day.
There’s a reason they use this stuff for seatbelts - it’s strong! With a breaking strength of 3000 lbs, these straps will outlast them all.
Powder coating is a process used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coatings contain no solvents and release little or no amount of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) into the atmosphere.
The inside of our bags are lined with sustainable fabric that is 65% recycled polyester and 35% organic cotton. Recycled polyester is made from plastic bottles used for drinking and soda packaging. The recycled PET bottles deliver a soft, luxurious, colorfast product without depleting the earth’s natural resources. Approximately 10 PET bottles are recycled to produce each backpack. Traditional cotton crops are treated with pesticides, insecticides, herbicides and Genetically Modified Organisms. These toxins are harmful for farmers and workers, us as consumers, and entire wildlife eco-systems. By choosing organic cotton, we protect the earth and it’s workers from these toxins. Organic cotton farming also uses less water and maintains important minerals and nutrients in the earth’s soil that are depleted in traditional cotton farming, leading to more chemical use.
Vegetable tanning is a process of dying in which only natural solvents are used to color the leather. This means no toxic off-gassing occurs, keeping the dyers and our planet safe. Leather is one of the oldest, most durable materials known to man. We chose it for it’s timeless appeal and suppleness. Used for strapping and trims, it is strong, self healing, and comfortably flexible.
Our Cloud Comfort memory foam contributes to LEED credits and is made with natural minerals and soybean oils (vs. petro oils), resulting in very low VOC content. This 100% visco-elastic memory foam is engineered to provide a supportive layer of cushioning while the proprietary moisture barrier allows vapour to escape, keeping you cool and dry.
